Description

Ben Hall hold up site in Canowindra.

At the co-ordinates there is a memorial. The first plaque reads:

This tablet marks the site of
Robinson's Hotel

The hotel was the scene
of two spectacular raids
by the bushranges

Gilbert, Ben Hall, Vane
O'Meally and Burke

on the 26th Sept. and 11th Oct. 1863.

On the latter occasion the
bushrangers invested the town
and held it against all comers
for three days and nights
providing compulsory
entertainment and refreshment
at their own cost
in the interim.

But wait... it is the wrong pub!

Research by Canowindra and District Historical Society has established that the Inn on this site was built for Thomas Icely c.1846. It was licenced by members of the Robinson family at different periods from 1852 to c.1872. William Robinson senior licensed it as the Travellers' Rest from 1852 until his death in 1860.

William Robinson jnr's inn, raided by bush rangers in 1863, was due north of this site across the the river near the bend in Gaskil Street.

The last plaque reads:

On the 26th November 1846
the flooded Belubula was
crossed at this spot
by the Governor

Sir Charles FitzRoy
who five years later
was appointed the first
Governor General of Australia

Finally: your task, to log this cache, is to locate this memorial then cross the flooded Belubula where you will locate the real Robinson Hotel.
At some point you should take the opportunity to partake in compulsory entertainment and refreshment at your own cost and post a photo.

Found it
I had my eye on this a while knowing I would be passing through town soon. So I did some planning and I held up the Hotel myself! Muhahaha! Twisted Evil

OK not really, but the hotel which now stands on the site of the holdup is called "The Royal" and inside you will find some great history on the raids and rangers. I spent the night here passing through town after visiting the memorial for the FTF Very Happy Cheap bed, good eats, friendly staff... the pub celebrates turning 100 years next month too!

Cheers from Sydney
