Description

The Arm River track is the shortest route into Pelion Hut, which is located about halfway along the Overland track.

Mt Oakleigh, Pelion East, Pelion West, and Mt Ossa are all able to be climbed as day walks from Pelion Hut.

The Arm River track is a reasonably easy walk after an initial steep climb, is fairly sheltered, and takes in some spectacular scenery and views.

Map Reference: TASMAP 1:25,000 Rowallan and Cathedral cover the whole track.

Ref - Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair and Walls of Jerusalem National Parks by Chapman, Chapman and Siseman, for access, detailed track notes, planning and safety.

The track junction to Mt Oakleigh is on the Arm River track on the Eastern side of a steel suspension bridge over Douglas Creek, 400m from Pelion Hut.

The return walk from Pelion Hut to Mt Oakleigh is 9.6 km and takes approx. 4.5hrs. The cache is located on a high point at the Western end of the Plateau, near a rock cairn. From here there are magnificent views of most of the major peaks in the Park. The true summit is 700m north along the Plateau.

Pelion Hut sleeps 60, and has a wide verandah all around, which is great for sleeping on.

Walking time from carpark to Pelion Hut is approx. 4-5 hrs.

Cache is a 200ml Sistema, with log book, pencil and stash note.

I hiked up Mt Oakleigh with a new friend in the afternoon, after doing the Windermere to Pelion section of the Overland Track. We got within 800m of the cache, but I was more than happy with the views and achievement of reaching the secondary peak, so we traipsed back on down as the sun started to set, instead of pressing on to this one.

Yeah, I'm soft. Smile

Found it
This mountain has some of the best views I have seen in Tassie, with mountains all around - Ossa, Pelion East and West, Cradle, Barn Bluff, Roland, Black Bluff, Cathedral Mountain and so on. Most of the peaks had a dusting of snow when I was there.
It took us about 4.5 hours return from Pelion Hut, but it would have been nice to have more time to take in the views. We walked in to Pelion Hut one day, then went up Oakleigh early the next morning and walked out the same day.

Geoskid's Arm River Track series is fantastic, however you need to be prepared for blizzards. My group had snow on the way in, and it was bitterly cold. I don't reckon you would last long on top of Mt Oakleigh if you were caught out in bad weather, and it can change very quickly. If you are prepared though, this would have to be one of the best sited caches around.
